How to Update the Firmware for a MagSafe Battery Pack

The MagSafe Battery Pack is Appleā€™s solution for charging your iPhone on the go. The battery pack wirelessly attaches to the back of your iPhone using MagSafe and charges your phone.

Apple occasionally releases firmware updates for the MagSafe Battery Pack to improves the iPhone charging speed or other features. This article explains how to update your MagSafe Battery Pack firmware, so you can take advantage of any improvements.

MagSafe Battery Pack Updates

Apple released a firmware update for the MagSafe Battery Pack on April 20th, 2022, that enabled 7.5W charging on the go, which is greater than the previous 5W limit. This allowed iPhones to charge using MagSafe a bit quicker than before.

While this still isnā€™t as much as the 15W charging speed that other wired MagSafe accessories provideā€”one of several reasons to avoid the MagSafe Battery Packā€”this is still better than the original speed, so we recommend you update your MagSafe Battery Pack if youā€™ve never done so before.

Check Your MagSafe Firmware Version

If you have been using your MagSafe Battery Pack regularly, chances are that your iPhone may have automatically updated the firmware version.

To check which firmware version your MagSafe Battery Pack is running, attach the MagSafe Battery Pack to your iPhone. On your iPhone, navigate to Settings > General > About and select MagSafe Battery Pack.

Youā€™ll see the firmware version here. The improved 7.5W charging was included in version 2.7.b.0, so if you have that or later, your MagSafe Battery Pack is likely already updated to the latest firmware. If this isnā€™t the case, hereā€™s how to update the MagSafe Battery Pack firmware version.

How to Update MagSafe Battery Pack Firmware

There are two ways to update the firmware on your MagSafe Battery Pack:

  • The easiest option is to simply attach the MagSafe Battery Pack to the back of your iPhone and it will automatically update. However, there can sometimes be delays in this, which is why if the firmware version doesnā€™t automatically update, you can try the second method.
  • The second method to update the firmware is to connect the MagSafe Battery Pack to a Mac or iPhone using a Lightning to USB-C cable. Once youā€™ve connected it, the firmware update should only take a couple of minutes (provided your Mac or iPad is connected to Wi-Fi). This usually works faster than the first method, which is why itā€™s worth a try.

Charging Your iPhone on the Go

The MagSafe Battery Pack is a great method to keep your iPhone charged on the goā€”especially when youā€™re on day-long trips, and you canā€™t find a socket to charge your phone. With the improved charging speeds, your iPhone should charge quicker, allowing you to save some time.
