On both iPhone and Android, you can dial an extension number without manually going through the main line. You can do this using your phone’s built-in Phone app, and we’ll show you how.
Dialing an Extension on iPhone
- Open the Phone App: Launch the built-in Phone app on your iPhone.
- Enter the Main Number: Dial the main phone number (the base number without the extension).
- Add a Pause:
- Press and hold the * (asterisk) key until a comma ( , ) appears after the main number.
- The comma indicates a pause before dialing the extension.
- Enter the Extension: Type the extension number after the comma.
- Call: Tap the Call button. Your iPhone will automatically dial the main number, pause, and then dial the extension.
TIP:
You can save numbers with extensions in your contacts for even quicker dialing. Just follow the same steps and save the full number (main + pause + extension) as a contact.
Dialing an Extension on Android
For most Android devices, dialing an extension is just as simple. Follow these steps:
Using the Google Phone App
- Open the Phone App: Launch the Phone app on your Android device.
- Enter the Main Number: Dial the main phone number.
- Add a Pause:
- Tap the three-dot menu beside the number and select Add 2-Sec Pause. This inserts a comma ( , ) after the main number.
- Alternatively, you can press and hold the * (asterisk) key until a comma appears.
- Enter the Extension: Type the extension number after the comma.
- Call: Press the Call button, and your phone will handle the dialing automatically.
For Other Android Phone Apps
Some Android devices may have slightly different steps, but the principle is the same: Add a pause (using a comma) and then enter the extension.
Why Use a Pause?
The pause allows your phone to wait briefly after dialing the main number before automatically proceeding to the extension. This is helpful when extensions can’t be dialed immediately upon connecting.
With these steps, you can seamlessly connect to extension numbers on both iPhone and Android. No more hassle or manual entry—just quick and direct connections!
